FOOD & COMMUNITY IN PHILADELPHIA AND BEYOND

EDITOR'S LETTER
LOOKING FORWARD

LIKE EVERYONE, I’ve been pretty much stuck in my house for 13 months, but I’ve never been so homesick. There are so many places, people, and scenes from across town that I have not laid eyes on for over a year.

That’s why for this issue we wanted to feature an iconic image of Philadelphia on the cover. It’s a reminder of what’s great about this place and a celebration that, though times have been hard, together, we are Philly.

And we are still here.

Finally, I’m starting to hope for an end to the pandemic thanks to the vaccine rollout. I have a list of all the food things I’m going to do when I’m fully vaccinated. In no particular order, here’s what I’m looking forward to doing again very soon:

  • Cooking in my home for friends and family.
  • Shopping at Reading Terminal Market.
  • The rutabaga fondue at Vedge restaurant.
  • A tahini shake from Goldie.
  • Taking my granny cart to the Italian Market.
  • Coffeeshops. Any coffeeshop. All the coffeeshops.
  • Lunch meetings with friends and colleagues.

I could go on, but you get it. I will never take any of these wonderful experiences for granted ever again. I’m sure you have your own list of things you gave up for the sake of COVID safety that you’re ready to get back to. And if you’re looking for inspiration, don’t miss this issue’s “Food Life” section (pages 5 — 8) or our food lover’s guide to Chinatown (page 10).

Tell me what you’re most looking forward to post-pandemic on Instagram @EdiblePhilly or @JoyManning.

See you at the farmers’ market!
