Where to Eat: Unique Eats and Eateries of Philadelphia
Irene Levy Baker’s new book, Unique Eats and Eateries of Philadelphia (Reedy Press, 2018), isn’t just a restaurant guide. It’s a rich reference for curious, food-loving Philadelphians and tourists alike. It was a dessert that convinced her to write the book: five heaping spoonfuls of gelato. She found the gelato flight at Gran Caffè L’Aquila, which owners chef Stefano Biasini, Riccardo Longo and Michele Morelli opened on Chestnut Street in 2015 after the original location in L’Aquila, Italy was destroyed by an earthquake. Baker knew Philadelphians would be enchanted by both the caffè’s history and the flavors of zabaglione, pistachio and amarena cherry. “I hope the fun of it is getting ideas about places to eat, but also learning the stories behind them,” Baker says.
