Summer 2024 Issue
IT’S GO TIME FOR LOCAL FOOD
Corn. Tomatoes. Peaches. Basil. These are the sensational seasonal foods that define summer for me. I buy these and more—often in large quantities to freeze or preserve for later—at many of our region’s phenomenal farmers markets. You probably do, too. But if you don’t, what are you waiting for? Check out our annual farmers market guide and make your shopping plans.
For many, seafood is another highlight of the season, and in this issue we’ve got Alisha Miranda’s feature on the rise of seafood suppers in this city to get you even more excited to taste the local catch. You’ll also find Jill Waldbieser’s inspiring essay about an impromptu elderberry harvest and jam-making session. Don’t feel like making your own jams this year? Char Nolan profiled several top-notch local makers whose spreads will make your toast extra special.

HOT TOWN, SUMMER IN THE CITY
Summer is my favorite season. I know for some it can be too hot or it can seem like everyone’s gone and down the Shore, but I’ve always loved summer in the city. Since my first year living in Philadelphia, when I didn’t really know about the mass exodus to the Shore, I’ve enjoyed the long, hot, lazy days of summer strolling the quieter, emptier streets. It’s also a great time to snag a reservation at that restaurant that’s always booked the rest of the year. And I kind of love seeing all the tourists discovering how truly charming Philly can be, despite our reputation to the contrary.
For me, summer also means dining al fresco, concerts in the park, eating ice cream while watching late sunsets over the river, and an abundance of farmers markets boasting the bright, colorful, best of the season produce. I hope you take some time to slow down, settle in, and enjoy the city this summer. I know I will.
