Tia and Mark El have opened what is believed to be the first Black-owned bakery in the history of Reading Terminal Market. But the Els’ baked goods were already familiar to many Philadelphians before the grand opening in March. The couple debuted Sweet T’s Bakery in South Philadelphia in 2014. They closed the brick-and-mortar shop in 2018 but continued on with a food truck until opening their new RTM outpost. Their menu features sweet potato pie, sweet potato pound cake and sweet potato cheesecake. The bakery is open Tuesday through Saturday, with plans to expand to seven days a week. You can buy whole cakes and pies in person, or order online through Mercato.com.
