A Winter We Won’t Forget
THIS TIME LAST YEAR, when I was brainstorming resolutions for 2020, I had no idea what was coming at us. As this unprecedented year draws to a close, I find myself unable to even begin to set goals for 2021, yet here we are. The uncertainty makes it tough to look ahead, so I am taking this moment to look back.
The pandemic has affected few sectors as dramatically as the food world. Business models for restaurants, farms, grocery stores, and caterers have all changed. We’ve lost some of the restaurants that have made us who we are. At the same time, the creativity and big-heartedness of the industry is deeply moving. Just one recent example: Local restaurants came together for the Fuel the Polls initiative, which helped recruit poll workers by delivering free chef-made meals on election day.
This holiday season will be unlike any other. For most of us, one thing will stay the same no matter what: We’ll celebrate with food. I’m following Dr. Fauci’s advice and sitting out indoor gatherings, so it will be just my husband, Dan, and me at the Thanksgiving table this year. I ordered Thanksgiving dinner for two from Miss Rachel’s Pantry, which makes it feel less sad to be away from family.
Socially distant gift-giving will also lift my spirits. There’s a lot of great ideas for food lovers in this issue, especially in our gift guide. (Think: special nut butter, farm-fresh tomato sauce, and panettone!)
