Back To Life - A Thrilling Reunion with Philly Food Culture
EMERGING from the pandemic has been a thrilling reunion with many parts of local food culture I had been sorely missing. I have taken gleeful shopping trips to Reading Terminal Market and the South Philly Food Co-op. I have finally gone back to restaurants, enjoying recent meals at Le Virtu, Bing Bing Dim Sum, Spice Finch, and Baology.
Meeting friends at farmers’ markets has been the absolute best, though. After more than a year away from Headhouse Market, I swooped down on Savoie Organic Farm to buy too many of their absurdly delicious potatoes.
If you are up for a little farmers market exploration, you’ll want to check out our 2021 Farmers’ Market Guide. There are so many great ones in all corners of the region, each with its own personality.
And when you bring home your haul, consider using your seasonal ingredients to whip up a summer-inspired pizza. We asked pizza maven Peggy Paul Casella to write a primer on cooking pizza outside on the grill, and I think you’ll be inspired.
If you need a nudge to plan a mini-break, check out our article about Kennett Square. The annual Mushroom Festival, which was on pause last year, is back this fall and it’s one of my favorite regional events. Or hop over the bridge to New Jersey to visit Free Haven Farms. I hope you’ll find this issue as action-packed with ideas for summer food adventures as I did.
Until next time,
