Mount Airy's Downtime Bakery: Community is Their Bread and Butter
MOUNT AIRY’S NEW Downtime Bakery has officially opened its doors, and it’s quickly becoming a must-visit spot for local food lovers. Owners Dayna Evans and Sam Carmichael, who moved to the neighborhood in 2020, are excited to establish deeper roots.
“We fell in love with the neighborhood and community around us,” Evans says. After two and a half years of running Downtime as a pop-up, the bakery now has a permanent home where Dayna and Sam aim to create a welcoming space for locals to gather over bread, pastries, and coffee.
Signature items include sourdough bread loaves, sourdough tomato pie focaccia, gluten-free seasonal tarts, and chickpea fritter sandwiches on ciabatta. But what truly sets Downtime Bakery apart is the collaborative spirit.
So many of our friends and family have contributed memorable elements of the bakery, from the embroidery on the aprons by our friends at Skylight Quilts to the custom carpentry from Nat Fry Carpentry,” says Evans. Even the plates and mugs are crafted by her mother’s ceramics company, adding a personal touch to every visit.
Downtime Bakery is open Thursday through Sunday, 9am to 3pm. Stop by for a taste of what makes this new community-driven bakery so special.
