“THERE IS BUT ONE WATER ICE AND ITS NAME IS JOHN’S, the South Philly stand founded in 1945. My history intersects with this refreshing institution circa 1980. My dad would take me there, where I was delighted by the cherry and chocolate (the flavors I still order to this day) and marveled that my pops could eat the whole thing without a spoon. There’s something about the line, where you’ll find just near anybody and everybody. Even Obama got lemon at John’s, though that’s where we differ. He’s not wrong, though. Lemon is damn refreshing.”
