ONE RECENT EVENING, students at Mastery Charter Thomas in South Philadelphia took over a classroom with coolers full of live oysters. It was pick-up night for Fishadelphia—a student-run seafood buyers’ club. Talia Young, a former biology teacher at Thomas, started the program to connect local fishermen directly with shoppers. Members get a different type of seafood each week, depending on what’s in season. The amount varies, too. You might get 12 oysters one week and 4 pounds of porgy the next. Shares cost $20 each. You can sign up for the whole season or pay as you go. If you’re seafood shy, junior Charlisse Johnson says not to worry—they provide recipes with each share. “My favorite is the monkfish—I season it, let it marinate in the fridge, and the next night I pan-fry it,” she says. “Serve it with some string beans and you’ve got dinner.” fishadelphia.com
