Food for School: Helping Communities in Western Kenya

Samosas from Rafiki Foods
Samosas from Rafiki Foods

Rafiki Foods is known for the millet bread, injera, and samosas it sells at the Saturday Rittenhouse farmers’ markets. But founder Dorothy Dulo had bigger goals than tasty snacks: All proceeds from the business benefit community organizations in Western Kenya, where Dulo grew up. After graduating college in the United States, Dulo went back to visit her village and found it devastated by HIV. She founded the Rafiki Africa Foundation to fund the school her parents started for orphaned kids. She and her husband sell their prepared foods for a good cause at Rittenhouse and Swarthmore farmers’ markets. They also cater and run a shop selling fair trade pantry items and gifts.
