THE FOOD LIFE

Produce Rx

Radishes, cauliflower, carrots and beets

IF YOU COLLECT A CSA SHARE, you know that local produce isn’t cheap. The Farm to Families Initiative works to make that same produce affordable for those who need it most. Many of the program’s members don’t have easy access to affordable, fresh food. “It’s hard for doctors to talk to patients about diet when there’s no real solution,” says program director Jamiliyah Foster. Farm to Families works with Lancaster Farm Fresh to deliver boxes of produce to seven pick-up sites each week. Six of the sites are hospitals or medical centers, because the organization wants their boxes to be available for those with chronic health issues that respond to dietary changes. Doctors can even write prescriptions for a subsidized weekly box ($10-$15).
