LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

MARKET SEASON

I’M WRITING TO YOU on a Wednesday. In my neighborhood, during the summer that means it’s farmers’ market day. All season, I organize Wednesday to make sure I can stop by—preferably on the early side to avoid crowds and enjoy the best selection—and shop for a weekly haul of local foods.

If you don’t currently have your own neighborhood farmers’ market routine going, turn to our guide on page 36. There you’ll find a listing of many of our favorite regional markets, with all the info you’ll need to go shop there. Once you’ve got your summer market schedule sorted, turn to page 26 to read our feature on how today’s Philly farmers’ markets are making local produce more accessible to more people.

Already a regular at the farmers’ market? Consider branching out and exploring some of the city’s many urban farm stands. These micro markets can be a bit hidden away, but our Road Trip column on page 44 tells where to find them, what to look for at each one, and where you might grab a bite nearby.

Since you’ve picked up this magazine dedicated to local food, I imagine you probably already value our local farms and farmers. You might even understand that due to our changing climate a farmer’s work is tougher than ever. Turn to page 32 to learn more about how climate chaos already is affecting our region and what local growers are doing to help ensure their farms’ futures.
